Record a visit and generate a note
Last updated: October 2, 2026
Record the visit in the aflow side panel and aflow drafts the note for you. This article covers recording, then reviewing and editing the note before it goes into your EHR.
Before you start
- Open the patient's chart in your EHR, then open aflow from the Chrome toolbar. The patient appears at the top of the side panel. If they don't, select Search or pick them from Upcoming appointments.
- aflow doesn't show a patient-consent prompt. Follow your practice's policy for telling patients the visit is recorded.
Record the visit
- In the Scribe card, check the template named above the record button. To use another one, select Change template.
- Select Start recording. The first time, a small window opens and Chrome asks for microphone access. Choose an Allow option.
- When the status shows Recording and the timer starts, begin the visit. To pause, select the pause icon. Select it again to resume.
- When the visit ends, select End & generate note.
aflow shows Transcribing recording, then Generating note. You can leave and come back. When the note is ready, it opens on the Progress note tab.
To throw a recording away, select the trash icon, then Discard. Discarded audio can't be recovered.
Review and edit the note
The note is a draft. Read every section before it goes into the chart.
- Edit: click into any section and type. Changes save automatically.
- Check diagnoses: each diagnosis shows its ICD-10 code. An AI badge means aflow suggested it from the conversation. Hover over the badge to see the supporting quote. Select Add Dx to add a diagnosis, or use the icons on a diagnosis to change or remove it. Codes are suggestions, so verify them.
- Dictate: hover over or click into a field, then select the microphone icon at its right edge. Text goes in where your cursor is. Select Stop when you're done.
- Check the source: open the Transcript tab to see what was captured.
- Add missing details: select Add context, type or dictate the details, and select Save & regenerate. This regenerates the note, so add context before you make edits.
If something goes wrong
- Microphone level is low: aflow opens Audio Settings during the recording. Pick the right microphone and check its position. Before you record, you can test your microphone with the gear button next to Start recording.
- No speech detected: the recording had no usable speech. Check your microphone and record the visit again.
- Recording interrupted: the recording stopped unexpectedly. Select Process captured audio to make a note from what was saved.
When the note looks right, send it to your EHR. See Send your note to your EHR.
