Why isn't aflow detecting my patient?
Last updated: October 2, 2026
When you open a patient's chart in a supported EHR, the aflow side panel should show that patient. If it says No patient open, work through these steps in order.
Try these fixes
- Open the patient's chart or note. aflow reads the patient from the chart or visit note, not from schedule, inbox, or search pages.
- Allow access to your EHR. If the panel shows Allow access, select it and confirm in Chrome's prompt. If you dismissed the prompt earlier, select Allow access again.
- Let the page finish loading. If the panel shows Could not read this EHR page, select Read page again. If that doesn't help, refresh the EHR tab.
- Keep your EHR in the same window. aflow follows the tab you're viewing in its own Chrome window. Open the side panel in the window where your EHR is, and click the chart's tab.
- Sign in. If you see Sign in to aflow, sign in. If you see Quick compliance check, complete the one-time HIPAA acknowledgment.
- Reload the panel. Open the menu at the top left of the panel and select Reload panel. Or close the side panel and reopen it from the aflow icon in Chrome's toolbar.
- Update aflow. If you see A new version of aflow is available, select Close & update, then reopen the panel. Also check that aflow is turned on at
chrome://extensions. - Check your practice. If you work for more than one practice, open the menu and make sure the right one is selected under Organization.
- Check your EHR. aflow detects patients only in supported EHRs. See Which EHRs does aflow work with?
If aflow shows a different patient
If you picked an appointment or patient in aflow, the panel stays with that patient. When your EHR has another chart open, you'll see EHR is on followed by that patient's name. Select Switch to change to the chart's patient.
Still not working?
You can keep working: select Search in the panel and find the patient by name, date of birth, or MRN.
Then let us know. Select Give feedback in the panel, or if the wrong patient appears, open the patient's menu and select Report an issue. You can also email support@aflowhealth.com with your EHR and the page you were on. Please don't include patient names or other patient details in email.
